PHIXER for Theater Sound / musical pit and stage multi-mic phase for livestream fold
FOH cans and pit headphones can feel rich while the same musical pit stack, stage wireless multi-mic, playback bed, or stream matrix thins on foldback, mono PA, phones, or a mono-ish livestream path. Patrons and remote viewers often preview on a single earbud or a summed phone path. Check mono and phone fold before curtain and before stream go-live. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a time-aligner, not a feedback fixer, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on a phone.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a livestream platform, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / phone check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo pit / stage / playback path you must keep stereo through foldback and stream preview.
Three theater / musical pit and stage fold modes
- Livestream / archival fold after encode. Remote patrons often preview on one earbud or a phone speaker. A pit + stage mix that sounds huge in FOH cans can soft-drop vocal body and low-end warmth when the stream path sums. Habit: true L+R sum on the stream / stereo theater bus before you go live. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Church Livestream / multi-mic worship stereo that collapses on phone.
- Musical pit and stage multi-mic on mono foldback / PA. Pit strings, reed stacks, dual brass spots, wireless principals, and stereo FX returns fight when house, foldback, or stream matrices fold. Mute wide FX briefly and re-check fold with dialogue and band up, not only soloed in cans. Cousin: PHIXER for Live FOH / foldback stream phase mono matrix.
- Stream matrix vs FOH vs foldback vs pit cans. Separate matrices can hide mono soft-drop until someone watches on a phone mid-act. Habit: mono compatibility checklist and the theater pit FAQ: theater pit / stage phase.
Fast theater / livestream mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the stream / stereo theater bus. Listen to dialogue body, pit warmth, and side beds.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: consonants, low-end warmth, wide pads under underscoring.
- Preview the bounce on a phone speaker or earbud with dialogue and pit up. Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs. Note which path thins the fold.
- Re-check fold after any limiter / encoder / livestream platform pass, not only before cleanup. Habit: mono compatibility checklist.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono / L+R listen plus phone preview
Hard L+R sum on the stream / stereo theater bus. Then preview on a phone speaker or earbud with dialogue and pit. Habit: mono compatibility checklist, Live FOH, and the 60-second audition above.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Dual pit spots, stage wireless vs pit, dual playback beds, stacked underscoring takes. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools
Nudge dual mics, pit spots, stage wireless, and wide beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.
4. Prefer correlated lows and center for phone fold
Keep dialogue body, kick / low pit body, and critical underscoring bed body correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: Live FOH and Church live.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo pit / stage / playback path must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Theater / musical pit and stage path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stream / archival stereo bus | Dialogue body and pit warmth soft-drop on phones | Hard mono bounce; phone / earbud check |
| Musical pit multi-mic stack | Warmth gone when spots + mains play | Polarity then timing; true L+R with band up |
| Stage wireless principals vs pit | Swish or cancel on foldback / stream | Theater pit FAQ; less width in lows |
| Stereo FX / Haas under underscoring | Body gone when stream folds | Mute wide FX; correlated center |
| FOH vs foldback vs stream vs pit cans | Fine in cans, thin on phone mid-act | Live FOH; re-check after encoder |
| Limiter / livestream encode after mix | Fine in headphones, thin after encode | Re-check fold after limiter / encode / go-live, not only before |
Church live and Live FOH cousins (short version)
- Church livestream / multi-mic worship stereo and Live FOH / foldback stream phase share the same L+R habit as theater / musical pit and stage multi-mic before curtain and before stream go-live.
- Polarity and timing still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Polarity flip, a few ms of delay, feedback, room-EQ, or encoder artifacts that a mono listen already explains.
- Trying to "fix" mono foldback with a widener or Haas on dialogue / pit lows.
